High School Night - Tomorrow

Tomorrow evening, Wednesday, October 15 is Gilkey's annual high school information night from 6 to 8 PM. This evening is open to all middle school families. Each high school will set up in a Gilkey classroom and give three sets of 30-minute presentations with 20 minutes for general questions at the end of the third session. You may visit up to three presentations. Here is a list of the high schools attending and their room assignments:

  • Lincoln High School (3-P)
  • Catlin Gabel (3-K)
  • Northwest Academy (3-A)
  • Saint Mary’s Academy (3-N)
  • Central Catholic High School (3-C)
  • Oregon Episcopal School (3-I)
  • Jesuit High School (4-K)
  • Valley Catholic High School (3-H)
  • Sunset High School (4-L)

Community Service Morning - This Thursday

All Gilkey advisory classes will be participating in Community Service Morning on and off campus this Thursday, October 16. Thank you to all parent who have volunteered to help and/or drive. Please remember that Megan in the Gilkey Office needs a copy of your driver's license as well as insurance card in addition to the records received from the DMV. We will start right at 8:30. Parents and students should meet in their Advisory rooms unless instructed differently. Everyone should be back by the end of lunch.

Pick-Up Reminders

  • Don’t rush or arrive too early! The first 15 minutes of FASCA are free! For example, if your child is released at 3:15 and you are not here yet, your child will go to FASCA at 3:30 and they are welcome there at no charge until 3:45.
  • Do you have a LS student and a MS student? Don’t worry – your lower school student is welcome to stay in the circle until you arrive at 3:40 to pick up your middle schooler.
  • No need to park! The drive-through pick up service works well and keeps you dry in the rain!
  • This week has been exceptionally difficult due to the loss of the fire station parking lot and the presence of our fifth grade exchange students (and their field trip buses). Pick-up congestion will ease after the October break.
  • Please – do not park along the west side of 87th street or leave your car unattended in the bus lanes

Thanks to everyone for their cooperation and patience!

School Photo Retakes - Tomorrow

If you or your child are unhappy with their photos and would like a retake, please return the complete photo package to the Front Office. We will then add you to our list for retakes tomorrow, October 15. If your child was absent on School Photo Day, then please plan for him/her to be photographed on Retake Day as well. Please email info@lophotos.com with any questions.

Annual Fund Week

Look for the Annual Fund Blue Tent at drop-off and pick-up, make your gift, and get your Starbucks fix (a.m.) or a candy treat (p.m.)! The Annual Fund is one of FAIS’ most important fundraisers, and helps bridge the gap between the tuition families pay and the actual cost of educating each student. A gift of any size makes a difference for our students and donations are 100 percent tax-deductible. We hope to see participation from all our families. Show your support for our amazing school and faculty by making your donation during this kick-off week! *Gifts made before December 31 may be deducted from your 2014 taxes; all donations made before June 31, 2015 count for this year’s Annual Fund.

La Fete du Vin 2014

Purchase your tickets and make plans to join FAIS family winemakers and distributors on Saturday, November 8 for La Fête du Vin! This year’s event, co-chaired by Kim Hasle and Shannon Conley, will be held in the Atrium at Montgomery Park in NW Portland and will feature wines from Bergström, Cameron, Domaine Drouhin, Patton Valley, Petit Monde and Scott Paul. Pilon D’Azucar will provide musical entertainment for the evening’s festivities. All wine offerings are available for purchase (by the bottle or the case) and wine orders will be available for pick up Friday, November 21, in time for Thanksgiving celebrations and other holiday gatherings! Plus, case orders receive a 10 percent discount, even on mixed cases. Family vintners generously donate 30 - 50 percent of wine sales to support programs at FAIS.

New Lunch Forms

New lunch order forms are available online for the period of October 27 through December 18. They are due in the Front Office by 5 pm on Tuesday, October 21. If you miss the deadline, you may still order lunches by dropping off forms no later than Tuesday afternoon for the following week’s lunch delivery. Please make all checks payable to the individual vendor. Questions or problems? Please contact the Red Fig at redfigpdx@gmail.com or Pizza Schmizza at schmizzabarnesroad@yahoo.com. In an effort to cut down on waste, please don’t forget to send a napkin and utensils with your student.

Gilkey Eagles Basketball - Grades 5 and 6

The 5th-6th basketball season will start right after the ACE/Arts Week break; there are still some spots available and you can sign up online. There are separate teams for boys and girls, and games and practice days are usually Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. There are about ten games in the MCLeague, no playoffs, and the season ends by the last week before winter break. If you have any questions please contact Athletic Director Jonathan Mascaut

Milk at Lunch

Many students have been asking for milk during lunch, but are not on our milk list. If you know that your child would like to receive milk with their lunch, please take a moment to purchase it for them. Prices are prorated monthly.

PM Classes - Many Still Open

Many PM Classes have space available. Prices have been prorated to reflect where we are in the term.

FAIS Family Directories Are Here

The printed version of the FAIS Family Directory for 2014-15 is now available for pick-up from the Front and Gilkey Office—one copy per household, please. Remember that the most up-to-date directory information can always be found online through the parent portal of the FAIS website.

Head Lice

With a week off from school approaching we’d like to remind you to take a moment to check your students’ hair for lice before they return to school. Vacations are a great time for people to get together and spend time with family and friends. The travel and visiting provides more opportunity for head lice to spread easily among loved ones and friends.

Checking for lice is most effectively done while the hair is wet, with a special lice comb, and with a follow up check again in 7-10 days. If nits/lice are found, please treat your children before they return to school. Once treated, there is no reason they should miss class.

Lice are not a threat to the health of your child, but they certainly are a nuisance. We truly appreciate your vigilance. Weekly wet checks are the most effective way of controlling a potential outbreak at school. Please refer to the CDC website for general questions or help with lice/nit recognition.

Volunteer Corner

LA FETE DU VIN

If you are interested in helping load in, set up, check-in, assist with catering, event details or clean-up, we want you! Preparations for this event will begin on Saturday, November 8 at 9 AM, and shifts continue through 11 PM depending on volunteer role. We will need many hands to make this a fantastic event for our community, and it's an easy way to use up those volunteer hours. Volunteers who work during the event will accrue double hours and clean-up crew accrues triple hours. For information or to volunteer, email Cris Gilman at cgilman@faispdx.org.

PARENTS NIGHT OUT

The PLC is organizing a Parent Night Out event. This event will provide families of FAIS students with an opportunity to mingle with other families or enjoy the evening alone while their children are cared for courtesy of the PLC. We are looking for parent(s) to coordinate the event for grades 3-5 on March 20. This position entails the following:

  • Arranging On site care with FAIS staff members
  • Providing Snacks and Drinks
  • Arrange Movie and/or Games for students

A guide with details of this event and staff connections are already provided. It only requires a parent(s) to execute them. If you are interested, please email Lubna Qureshi lfqureshi@gmail.com.

NATURE TRAIL WORK PARTY: Thursday, October 16; 8:30 AM - 12:30 PM

Help us increase the biodiversity and ecological stability of the FAIS forest and continue efforts toward maintaining our Audubon Society's Backyard Certification! During this work party you will help to support native plant and animal species by managing invasive species. We will also complete maintenance tasks to ensure safe access to trails and outdoor classrooms. Bring plenty of energy and tools if you have them: shovels, steel rakes, wheel barrows, buckets, clippers, and/or loppers. Rain or shine, meet in the FAIS Garden area and earn up to four volunteer hours.

Contact Beth Clifton with questions, bclifton@faispdx.org

LIBRARY

The Library is looking for a parent volunteer to help shelve books (Dewey Decimal Classification system) for the entire school year. Ideally we would train one person only who would be able to come and shelve books five hours a week for four months and one other person for the rest of the year. Please contact Library Director Elizabeth Serreau if interested.

ARTS WEEK

Are you a parent looking for volunteer hours? Spots are available M-F during Arts Week (October 20 - 24) from 11:00 to 1:30 PM to help with lunch set-up / clean-up. If you're interested, please email Genna at grobertson@faispdx.orgAre you a student and want to get involved? I'm looking for a few 7th and 8th grade students to act as motivated leaders to help be a part of a "Leaders in the Arts" committee, to bring awareness to other Gilkey students about the Arts Week program and to help manage special projects during Arts Week. If you're interested, please email Genna at grobertson@faispdx.org

FUNDRAISER FOR BABY SIRI
Former FAIS teacher and parent Katia Lane and her husband, Mark, unexpectedly had their baby girl Siri at 6 months. Siri came into the world at 1 lb. 9oz. However, she suffered from a bilateral grade 4 brain hemorrhage. Siri is currently at Texas Children's Hospital and is now 2 lbs. 7 oz. They were at the start of a 1-year adventure traveling internationally with Mark's job, but those plans are now cancelled and Mark had to turn down the role. Please consider helping them during this very difficult time.
